You search jobs.ch, Indeed and LinkedIn, apply to every fitting posting, and still rarely hear back. Often that has nothing to do with your CV. It is because a large share of open positions in Switzerland never appears on those platforms at all. At the end of 2025 the Federal Statistical Office counted around 86,000 open positions, but that is only the visible part. The rest forms what is called the hidden job market. The good news: "hidden" does not mean "unreachable". Most of these jobs are findable once you understand why they are missing. This guide splits the hidden market into four clear pools and shows the concrete way into each one.
What the hidden job market really is
The hidden job market covers every open position that is not publicly advertised on the big job portals. The term sounds mysterious, but it describes something very ordinary: a company needs someone and fills the role through an internal tip, its own careers page, or a recruitment agency, without ever posting on jobs.ch.
How big this market is depends heavily on the definition, and this is exactly where many conflicting numbers circulate. Various guides cite 60 to 70 percent, while Swiss sources tend to say that roughly one fifth of positions are filled "under the hand". The truth sits somewhere in between and varies by industry and seniority: for management roles the share is far higher than for entry-level jobs. Rather than clinging to a single percentage, it is more useful to understand that "hidden" is not one bucket. It is four very different pools, and each one calls for a different strategy.
The four pools of invisible jobs
Most guides throw everything into one bucket and then blandly recommend "networking". That falls short. Networking only helps with one of the four pools. Anyone who really wants to tap the hidden market has to first recognise which pool the target job sits in.

Pool 1: Jobs that are never advertised
This is the classic hidden job market in the narrow sense. The role is never published anywhere because it is filled through a referral, an internal promotion, or a personal contact. Often the role is even created around a specific person. Here there simply is no posting that a crawler or search engine could find. This pool can only be reached through people: through your network, through speculative applications, and through referrals. For Pool 1, networking really is the main route.
