German employment references (Arbeitszeugnis) use a secret code language. What sounds like praise might be a hidden warning. Paste yours and we decode every phrase, line by line.
Paste your German employment reference to decode the hidden grades
The most important phrase in any Arbeitszeugnis is the satisfaction formula ('Zufriedenheitsformel'). Subtle word variations — 'stets', 'vollsten', 'vollen' — shift the grade dramatically. Missing the word 'stets' alone can drop your rating by a full grade.
German employers are legally required to mention certain categories: social skills, initiative, work quality. When a section is missing, it's not an oversight — it's a deliberate negative signal. Recruiters know this and look for gaps.
This is NOT a compliment. 'Always tried hard' means they tried but consistently failed. This is a grade 5 — the worst possible rating.
In everyday German, this sounds great. In an Arbeitszeugnis, it means the person had no real qualifications and the employer found nothing else positive to say.
The order matters. Listing 'colleagues' before 'superiors' signals conflict with management. The correct order is always superiors first, then colleagues, then customers.
'Was a sociable employee' is code for spending too much time chatting and socializing instead of working. In some cases, it even hints at alcohol problems.
Wishing success without 'continued' ('weiterhin') implies they weren't successful in this role. The missing word says everything.
Every employee is legally entitled to an Arbeitszeugnis. Your employer must issue one upon request — even after leaving the company.
If your Zeugnis contains unfairly negative coded language, you can demand corrections. For grades below 3, the employer must prove the poor rating is justified.
You can request a 'qualifiziertes Zeugnis' that evaluates your performance and behavior, not just a simple confirmation of employment dates.
You have up to 3 years to request corrections (standard statute of limitations). Don't wait — take action while memories and records are fresh.
For a grade 4 or worse, the employer must prove the rating is justified. For grade 1 or 2, the employee must prove they deserve the upgrade.
Physical tricks (underlining, special formatting, smiley faces) are explicitly illegal. If you spot any, you have grounds for immediate correction.
