The Zoll, Germany's federal customs administration, is one of the country's largest public employers and a sought-after one: a secure civil-service career, fair pay from day one, and work that ranges from fighting fraud to border control. No wonder thousands apply every year. That is exactly why a careful application decides who gets invited.
This guide walks you through a Zoll application step by step. You will learn which requirements apply, which track in the intermediate or higher service suits you, by when you must apply, how to shape a convincing CV and cover letter, and what to expect in the selection procedure. By the end, you will know exactly what to do.
Requirements for a Zoll application
Before you apply, check whether you meet the basic requirements. Some apply to every track, others depend on the service you are aiming for.
General requirements
For a career at the Zoll you need German citizenship under Article 116 of the Basic Law, or citizenship of an EU state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland (Section 7 of the Federal Civil Servants Act). You must be no older than 49 at the start of training, be medically fit, have a clean criminal record and orderly finances, and commit to the free democratic constitutional order (intermediate-service requirements). You also need to be willing to wear a uniform, carry a weapon and work shifts. For the intermediate service, you must additionally provide the German Sports Badge in bronze, no older than twelve months and submitted by 15 June.
Educational requirements by track
The school qualification you need depends on the track. The intermediate-service apprenticeship requires an intermediate school diploma (Realschulabschluss), or a lower secondary diploma plus a completed two-year vocational training. The higher-service dual study programme requires the Abitur or a university entrance qualification. Foreign qualifications must be recognised as equivalent by the responsible authority. Check early which path matches your qualification, because it shapes the rest of your application.
