Research fellows hosted at the Centre for Pathogen Bioinformatics

The Centre for Pathogen Bioinformatics (CPB) hosts young researchers during their fellowships in the Basel area. With the groups of Emma Hodcroft, Niko Beerenwinkel, Richard Neher, and Tanja Stadler all based in the Basel life science hub, we offer a world-class research environment in the field of Pathogen Bioinformatics, with particular focus on evolutionary and epidemiological modelling, bioinformatics, statistics, phylogenetics, and large-scale genomic data analysis.

Stimulating research environment 

Support to translate research results into public health tools 

• We have an active research software developer group, supporting to turn research prototypes into maintained public health tools (such as NextStrain, V-pipe, CoVariants, Cov-Spectrum) 

Teaching, supervision and outreach opportunities 

• The four PIs are core to the teaching, supervision and outreach activities around the Center’s mission and support fellows to contribute to these activities. In particular the joint Master program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics provides exciting opportunities to supervise Master theses. 

Mentoring 

• The PIs of the Center will support you around next career steps through mentoring.

The CPB offers expertise and services in pathogen data management and analysis, computational molecular epidemiology, and related multi-site project management. Core data analysis platforms and dashboards which played major roles during the COVID-19 pandemic response contribute to the mission of the Centre. They facilitate the coherent interpretation of relevant data to be prepared for future pathogenic threats. At the interface between public health and research, the Centre ensures that Switzerland remains at the forefront of data management and data analysis required for real-time surveillance, generating insights for evidence-based global pathogen response and public health strategies.

If you are interested to join the Basel community as an independent research fellow of the Center for Pathogen Bioinformatics, e.g. through funding from, 

please send your CV together with a 1-page outline of your motivation and envisioned project to the E-Mail schreiben. Please also mention in your letter 1-2 envisioned funding schemes with their application deadline, as well as 1-2 PIs of interest (among Beerenwinkel, Hodcroft, Neher, Stadler).

We accept applications on a rolling basis. If we choose to support your path to becoming an independent fellow at our Center, we will actively assist you in applying to the funding schemes listed above, as well as others. Please note: if a particular fellowship requires a single host Principal Investigator (PI), you will receive formal support from one PI within the Center. However, you will still be encouraged to engage and collaborate across all groups in the Center, ensuring a broader and more enriching experience.

Note that CPB does not provide funding for research fellows. Hosting a research fellow is contingent on a successful fellowship application that CPB has supported.
